Mobile Activations (Same Carrier Port/Foreign Carrier Port/New Number)


There are three possible scenarios that will happen when a customer signs up for a mobile service. They either get a new number, transfer an existing number that is using the Optus network (Same Carrier Port), or transfer a number using a different network (Foreign Carrier Port).

There are only three mobile network carriers in Australia including Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone.

When a customer who is porting in a mobile number enquires when the service will be activated, confirm if it is same carrier port or ferign carrier port by asking the customer which network he/she was connecting to previously.

This is a guide to activating a mobile service and includes estimated timeframes and a summary of the different activation types.

Same Carrier Port Activation

When the user is moving from one service provider to another service provider and if the network carrier of both providers is the same, then its called a same carrier port. Porting is done manually, an additional step is involved (obtaining a CID) and port can up to 3 working days to complete. Porting hours are 8am-8pm, Monday-Saturday.

How do I know if the mobile service is a ‘same carrier port?

It is not an easy thing to check. Sometimes providers which are listed may on-sell services from multiple wholesale providers, such as Vodafone and Optus. Use the following list as a guide. If the customer is moving from one of these providers, there will be a longer delay than a ‘New’ or ‘Transfer’.

You can check to see what provider they are transferring from by clicking on the mobile service:

  1. Click on the mobile service
  2. Find out who the previous provider is under the Settings section

The following providers use Optus infrastructure and would be classed as a ‘Same Carrier Port’. Please note that these providers may use multiple wholesale providers so this should only be used as a guide:

Foreign Carrier Port Activation

When the user is moving from one service provider to another service provider and if the network carrier of the NEW service provider is different to the network provider of the OLD service provider, then its called a foreign carrier port. Porting is done automatically and both parties communicate with each other through system. If the port details are correct, the service will be ported within 4 working hrs. (8am-8pm, Monday-Sunday).

New Number Activation

If the customer does not have an existing mobile number to transfer, activation of the new service will be completed in 1 working day.
