SpinTel is excited to announce David Thom, a media, communication and marketing student at Sydney University, as the recipient of our 2024 Entrepreneur Grant. David’s innovative approach to tackling the challenges in the media industry has earned him this well-deserved recognition.

David's ambition is to make a lasting impact on journalism and the broader media landscape. He is fascinated by the impact of media on the social fabric of Australia, and how the ‘business of media’ can tangibly influence people's lives. However, he recognises that the media industry has long been plagued by issues such as unreliability and bias, which have led to a growing distrust in this important source of information and knowledge.

To overcome this, David has proposed a sustainable business model that can deliver information with reliability, integrity and neutrality.

One of David's key areas of focus is the potential of technological advancements, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), to address these challenges. His innovative concept involves developing a program that utilises AI to survey the internet, deciphering the sources of emerging news stories and identifying the biases present in their reporting.

This program would serve as a powerful tool for consumers, businesses and government agencies alike. David envisages that news outlets could use it to ensure the reliability of the content they produce, while consumers could verify the information they encounter daily. And government agencies could leverage this tool to detect potential sources of extremist ideologies online, enhancing public safety.
