There are six nbn® connection types: 1. Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) provides an optical fibre connection directly to your home or business. 2. Fibre-to-the-Node (FTTN) brings fibre to a central node, then uses existing copper wiring to connect to your premises. 3. Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTB) is common in units and commercial buildings, with fibre connecting to a central point in the building and existing internal wiring completing the connection. 4. Fibre-to-the-Curb (FTTC) brings fibre to a pit or pole outside your home, with the existing connection completing the connection to your premises. 5. Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) uses existing cable TV technology, connecting fibre to a node and coaxial cable to your premises. 6. Fixed Wireless is used in regional areas where laying physical fibre isn't feasible. It requires a roof-mounted antenna to receive signals from a local nbn® tower.
When upgrading to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP), an nbn® technician will install a new utility box outside and a connection box inside your home. The upgrade is free, but you may need to cover costs for internal wiring adjustments or relocating the box. For those upgrading from Fibre to the Node (FTTN), installation takes about 5 business days after ordering, with the process lasting 3 to 4 hours. More complex cases may take longer. For upgrades from Fibre to the Curb (FTTC), the process takes 19 to 29 business days and involves a pre-installation visit. Initial Assessment: An nbn® technician will assess the property within a week of ordering. This takes about an hour, and you don’t need to be home. Main Installation: Within 19 to 29 business days, the technician will install the required equipment. Ensure someone aged 18 or older is present. This visit usually takes 3 to 4 hours but may take longer for complex installations.
