Everything We Learned From the Latest Apple Event

By Generative AI

Every year, tech enthusiasts, professionals, and everyday consumers eagerly await the annual Apple Event, anticipating the latest innovations and revelations from one of the world's leading technology companies. The tradition of unveiling new tech did not disappoint this year, as Apple showcased a fresh lineup of iPhones and Apple Watches that promise to redefine our digital experience. Whether you're a dedicated Apple aficionado or just someone curious about the latest tech trends, here's a comprehensive rundown of everything we learned from the most recent Apple extravaganza.

iPhone 15

The biggest news from the Apple Event is the announcement of the new iPhone 15. With new cameras, new charging ports and other updates, there’s a fair bit to talk about. So let’s dive in.

The biggest change to the new iPhone has to be the implementation of the USB-C charging port. Despite Apple proudly using their proprietary lightning connector in their iPhones for over a decade, they have finally made the switch to USB-C. This comes as the European Commission requested all phone and laptop producers to utilise USB-C in all of their devices. The implementation of USB-C means you can now use the same connector for all of your apple and non-apple devices. Neat!

The iPhone 15 uses the A16 Bionic chip, previously found on the iPhone 14 Pro, as well as the Dynamic Island, also found on the iPhone 14 Pro.

The updated camera boasts 48MP, allowing for a 2X telephoto shooting option. The new display can reach up to 2,000 nits outdoors, from 1200 on last year's model. The updated portrait mode now automatically detects when someone is in frame, and gathers the data to allow you to enable portrait mode after the photo has been taken, even in normal photo mode.

The new iPhones are available for pre-order, starting at $1,499 for the iPhone 15 and $1,649 for the iPhone 15 Plus.

iPhone 15 Pro

The new iPhone 15 Pro packs a lot of new features into its new titanium frame, with a new chip, new camera, and a brand new button.

The ‘Action Button’ comes in place of the mute switch and is programmable by the user. It comes default as a mute switch, but can be changed to open the camera, voice memos, translate, the list goes on. This is a really great little addition to streamline common tasks.

The new A17 Chip features a six-core CPU for 10% faster CPU processing and 20% faster GPU processing. It uses an updated neural engine for improved machine learning performance, which means processes like identifying data in an image happen faster.

The GPU biggest redesign in Apple’s history now offers hardware-accelerated ray tracing, which offers 4X faster ray tracing than the A16 Bionic Chip. The power of this new chip means some console games can actually be played on your iPhone!

Both iPhone 15 models feature their updated 48MP camera and new portrait mode, but the pro also offers a couple more camera options. A new coating reduces lens flare, and the 15 Pro sees improved low light performance as well as a variety of focal lengths. The Pro Max’s features a telephoto camera with 5X optical zoom, so you can capture immense detail.

Apple Watch

The new Apple Watch probably brings the most innovation of anything announced with a new display, new hands-free features, as well as being Apple’s first carbon neutral product.

The new dual-core CPU has 60% more transistors than the S8 chip as well as a new neural engine which tackles machine learning tasks up to twice as fast, and allows for the new double tap gesture.

What is double tap? Double tap is a new hands-free gesture for the Apple Watch. Double tapping your index finger with your thumb will enable you to pause and play music, answer calls, pause timers, and so much more. Ever needed to answer a call while your hands are full with groceries? Well now you can!

Series 9

A new advanced display system increases brightness to up to 2,000 nits, double that of Series 8.

Siri requests are now processed onboard the Series 9, which allows for 25% faster dictation, faster response time, as well as increased security.

The new WatchOS 10 now gives more information at a glance for virtually every app, so you can easily keep track of everything from your wrist.

Apple has taken its first major step toward its goal of carbon neutrality by 2030. The Series 9 is Apple’s first carbon neutral product by using new materials as well as low-carbon shipping. They’ve also stopped selling leather straps to assist in their goal to reduce their impact on the environment.

Ultra 2

The Ultra 2 features the same updates as the Series 9 such as being carbon neutral, but is focused more for the outdoors. The brightness can go up to 3,000 nits, and the 49mm titanium case gives you plenty of space for customisable data to suit any activity.

The Ultra 2 also features the new Action button, which is programmable to suit your needs. You could make it start a workout, or start a dive, the choice is yours.

iOS 17

Although it isn’t groundbreaking, iOS 17 provides many nice-to-haves that Apple say will “enhance the things you do every day.” With the biggest improvements being made to Messages.

The Messages app has seen many small additions. You can now swipe a message to reply to it (finally), as well as request and send your location to someone. Check In automatically notifies people of your choosing when you arrive at your destination, which is great for families. Another great addition is the ability to filter the search bar in Messages.

StandBy is a new full screen feature used when your phone is placed horizontally when charging. It basically displays information at a glance, such as the weather or a clock. It’s a great little addition to make your phone look more functional when not in use.

NameDrop allows you to seamlessly AirDrop your contact details with others by simply holding your phone near theirs.

There are some other small features that you can find on the Apple website, but here we’ve covered the major updates.
