What Businesses Should Know About The NBN

News April 30th, 2020 3 MIN READ

As an Australian business owner, there’s no doubt that you’ve heard the term NBN in the last few years. But with the amount of contradictory content out there surrounding it, it might feel difficult to get a firm grasp on exactly what it is, how it will benefit your business and the best business NBN plan to choose.

To help clear this up, here is a brief guide covering all of the core factors regarding NBN, to ensure that you choose a plan with confidence.

What is the NBN?

The National Broadband Network (NBN) is an Australian open-access data network. Within the network, there are different types of speeds that have specific upload and download rates – which will appeal to various individuals.

The Benefits of The NBN

If you’re unsure as to whether an NBN plan is right for you, it’s first good to identify the benefits that will come with it. Not only does the NBN offer faster internet speeds due to the improvement in copper cable wiring, but improved stability, an improved speed of cloud-based applications and faster access to web and phone conferencing along with other online collaboration services.

As a direct result of connecting to the NBN, Australian businesses are seeing an increase in productivity within their workforce. Encouraging greater motivation due to rapid internet speeds, it makes the prospect of working both in the office and at home more convenient.

Types of NBN Services Available

There are three main types of NBN services available that businesses should be aware of. These are:

NBN Fixed Wireless

Offering fast speeds wirelessly, this type of service is typically chosen when a fibre network isn’t available in the area. Although this type of service is often confused with Wi-Fi, it actually refers to the wireless connection which transmits data using radio signals.

Although this is a flexible type of technology that ensures that everyone can access the NBN regardless of if they have fibre or not, it’s important to keep in mind that the equipment that you want to connect to the internet should be located at a close range to the transmission tower and that a mast and antenna will have to be installed.

NBN Fibre to the Node (FTTN)

This type of service utilises the existing copper network (micro-exchange) in your area in order to create a reliable connection with the NBN. Running up to your premise through this connection, it offers favourable fibre speeds but relies on the existing copper network to work efficiently.

NBN Fibre to the premise (FTTP)

This type of fibre service runs from the nearest available fibre node within the business premise, directly to a device of your choice. As the data travels via fibre, this service has the benefit of reliability and fewer issues with speed.

Although this type of service can vary in terms of potential speeds, it currently states that it’s up to 100 Mbps.

What Speeds Will Your Business Require?

As aforementioned, there are many NBN plans that a business can opt for. The type that you go for, of course, will depend on the plan configuration, how many people that you want to use the network at one time and the capabilities that you require.

At Spintel, we offer four key internet speeds, including the Basic 12, Standard 25, Plus 50 and Premium 100. For businesses, we typically recommend the NBN 50 and NBN 100 due to their core capabilities.

The NBN 50

For example, the NBN 50 typically offers a 45 Mbps day speed. This means that it has the ability to not only stream HD videos but it allows for concurrent downloads and gaming.

Ideal for regular internet usage throughout the day, it’s very beneficial for smaller businesses that have 3-4 people using the network at one time. A significant speed upgrade to ADSL connection, it’s a budget-friendly option that many small businesses will love to use.

The NBN 100

The NBN 100 on the other hand, offers a typical day speed of 90 Mbps with 50 Mbps up. Because of its speeds, the NBN 100 is best for businesses who regularly download and upload large files and that want to stream 4K video.

The best option for those who wish to use the network intensively and that require more devices to be connected to the internet without reliability issues,  it’s suitable for businesses of 5 or more people.
