What are Missed Call Services and How Do I Use Them?

Missing an important call can be frustrating, especially when you have lots of messages in your voicemail inbox. Missed Call Services are a great alternative to voicemail, allowing you to choose which messages to listen to, without even having to dial up voicemail!

What are Missed Call Services?

Missed Call Services are a convenient and simple tool that is used when you miss a call. An alternative to traditional voicemail, the Missed Call Service prompts the caller to leave a short message (up to 1 minute), which is recorded and sent to you as a multimedia message (MMS). The MMS comes with an audio recording file of the caller’s message. The audio recording can be played from your phone. Missed Call Services are a great alternative to voicemail as you don’t have to dial up a number and go through each voicemail. Instead you can pick which voicemails you want to listen to and in which order you choose.

Are Missed Call Services the same as Voicemail?

Voicemail sends messages to a message bank, which you can then access by dialling a specific number. The voicemails are then played from oldest to newest. Missed Call Services send each voice recording as an MMS, which allows you to access them the same way you would an SMS, and can be played in any order you choose.

What is MMS?

Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) allows users to send and receive multimedia content from their mobile phones through a mobile network, similar to an SMS. MMS lets you send and receive files such as photos, videos, and audio files, which are necessary for Missed Call Services. MMS files (including Missed Call Services) are stored on your phone. A 1 minute message is roughly 92 kilobytes.

When are Missed Call Services used?

Missed Call Services can be used anytime you are unable to answer a call. They have you covered if you:

  • Have your phone switched off.
  • Are busy on another call.
  • In a poor coverage area.

Missed Call Services are an easy way to manage and keep up-to-date on missed calls.

How do I enable Missed Call Services?

Missed Call Services are available to anyone who uses an MMS compatible phone or tablet. If you’re unsure whether your device is compatible, don’t worry; any handset released from 2002 or later has MMS capability. Your mobile data must also be switched on to receive MMS messages.

Users have to opt in with their mobile network provider to enable Missed Call Services. There are three options when opting in:

SMS

Call

Online

Text the word ON or OFF to 159 from your mobile phone to opt-in or opt-out of Missed Call Services

Call 159 from your mobile and follow the prompts.

Log into your mobile provider account online and navigate to Missed Call Services, usually located in Settings.

This method is not available for all mobile providers.

How much does it cost?

The cost to use this feature varies depending on the service provider. SpinTel offers Missed Call Services on most of their mobile plans at no extra cost!

Can I use Missed Call Services while Travelling?

If you are roaming overseas, you must enable data roaming ON in order to receive voice messages through MMS, since mobile data is required to receive MMS. Data roaming typically incurs extra fees, so we suggest you turn off Missed Call Services before travelling overseas. You will have to turn it back on when you return to Australia.

Bonus Tip!

Have you ever heard your phone ringing, but you just miss the call before you can reach your phone? It’s a common problem for many people, but can easily be fixed by increasing your ring time. This will help you avoid having to spend extra time calling people back. You can do this by dialling **61*321**[number of seconds]# on your mobile phone. The number of seconds must be in multiples of 5 (5, 10, 15, 20 and so on). Once you click dial, you will hear a confirmation message followed by a voice prompt.
